Abstract This paper presents an alternative approach to wavelet smoothing procedure for a time series model of signal added to autocorrelated stationary errors. The aim is to estimate the signal globally with near minimum risk. The usual approach to this problem is to threshold the wavelet coefficients with different thresholds in each level. In this paper, the autocorrelation is taken account in a parametric way letting the wavelet methods for the funcion estimation only. Thus, an iterative semi-parametric method is proposed. This iterative method borrows some ideas from the Cochrane-Orcutt procedure. The simulation results show that the proposed method is at least as good as other benchmark wavelet methods independent of the type of autocorrelation present in the error term.

A wavelet-based method to remove spatial autocorrelation in the analysis of species distributional data

Accepted 4 April 2008 Copyright © EEF ISSN 1399-1183 Species distributional models based on lattice data often display spatial autocorrelation. Spatial autocorrelation means that observations from nearby locations are often more similar than would be expected on a random basis (Legendre and Legendre 1998). Spatial autocorrelation can arise in both species distributions and environmental variabl...

The Impact of Maritime Transportation Instability on International Trade Instability: Combination Spatial Panel data Econometric Approach and Wavelet Smoothing

The main objective of this study is to evaluate the impact of maritime transportation instability on international trade instability based on wavelet smoothing and spatial panel data econometric method during the period 1990-2012. The results showed that the spatial effects have an impact on international trade instability. So that a sudden 100 percent increase in international trade in the nei...

Nonparametric Regression with Correlated Errors

Nonparametric regression techniques are often sensitive to the presence of correlation in the errors. The practical consequences of this sensitivity are explained, including the breakdown of several popular data-driven smoothing parameter selection methods. We review the existing literature in kernel regression, smoothing splines and wavelet regression under correlation, both for short-range an...

Wavelet Shrinkage for Regression Models with Uniform Design and Correlated Errors

This paper presents some results on semi-parametric regression using wavelet methods in the presence of autocorrelated stationary Gaussian errors, and when the explanatory variable follows an Uniform distribution. It is shown that this Uniform distribution arrives in the special cases of stochastic sampling: the Poisson and the jittered sampling schemes. The aim is to estimate the signal global...

The Role of Pseudo Data for Robust Smoothing with Application to Wavelet Regression

This paper proposes a robust curve and surface estimate based on M-type estimators and penalty based smoothing. This approach also includes an application to wavelet regression. The concept of pseudo data, a transformation of the robust additive model to one with bounded errors, is used to derive some theoretical properties and also motivate a computational algorithm. The resulting algorithm, t...
